Susan Warner: The Wide, Wide World

Language:
English
Genres:
Fiction & Literature, Romance, Travel & Adventure, Novel

Elizabeth Wetherell was a pen name of Susan Bogert Warner (1819-1885) — an American writer who worked in the genre of religious literature, both fiction and non-fiction. Her early novels gained recognition for the truly portrayal of rural life in America. At the same time her works were interesting due to the depiction of the gender roles and the position of women in the Amewrican Society of those times.

'The Wide, Wide World' is the first and the most famous novel by Susan Warner and it represents a bright example of sentimentalism in literature. The central figure of the story is a young girl, Elen Montgomery. Elen's father goes away to Europe taking her ill mother with her and leaving the girl alone with the aunt.
