Sir Gilbert Parker was the popular Canadian novelist, short-story writer and British politician, best known for his stories of French Canadian culture and history. Moving to England in 1889, he made his literary reputation with romantic novels and short stories "about" Canada. The highly descriptive and dramatic historical stories established his permanent place in literary history.
“The Translation of a Savage” is a novel, published in 1893. In accordance with Manchester Guardian magazine, the book is "a strong and successful piece of workmanship. The portrait of Lail, strong, dignified, and pure, is exceptionally well drawn". The plot is original and one difficult to work out. But Mr. Parker has done it with great skill and delicacy.
