Thomas Crane was an American scholar and writer, mostly known as a collector and publisher of folk-tales and legends. A master of many languages, Crane translated French, Italian and Spanish works, having become one of the most popular adapters of children’s fairy tales. «The Shepherd who made the King's daughter laugh» is an Italian fairy tale about a king and a queen having only daughter whom they loved very dearly. But on a very unlucky day misfortune came into their home. Suddenly their lovely daughter became sad and would not laught any more. So the king decided to find a person who could somehow cure her and issued a proclamtion promised to make him her husband. Is it real for a usual shepherd's son to be that person?
