William Cowper (1731 – 1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. «The Diverting History of John Gilpin» is a well known comic ballad by William Cowper about young fellow named John Gilpin. Obviously very old, but quite funny story concerns a draper called who rides a runaway horse. Told in old British rhyme it will give every reader the chance to plunge into the world of exciting comic tale. Have a nice reading.
