Charles Montgomery Skinner was an American writer, editor, dramatic and art critic, mostly known as a collector and rewriter of North American folklore. He published collections of myths, legends, histories and oral narrative found inside the United States and across the world. The writer’s task Skinner identified in saving the folk traditions endangered by the age of America’s progress.

“The Death Waltz” is a mystic short story, entered in the collection “Myth and legends of our own land”. The narration is about a pretty young lady living in the military post at Fort Union, New Mexico, who has the pay for her love by the officers. But one young lieutenant proves especially susceptible to her charms. Going to the military expedition he promises to win her hand and marry her. Being a coquette, the lady facetious gives the word to waiting him. But when the lieutenant is missing, she forgets her words and marries a young man from the East. Soon she will be sorry for the broken promise…
