Thomas Bailey Aldrich was an American poet, travel writer and editor. He wrote numerous tales, short-stories and novels. Most of his works were based on personal experience, so several stories represents the episodes of Aldrich’s own life. When the Civil War began Aldrich became a war correspondent for the New York Tribune attached to General Blenker’s division of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. His horrific wartime experiences would influence his later writings. The action of “Père Antoine's Date-Palm” takes place in New Orleans and represents the tale about Père Antoine, an old priest, who died about twenty years ago. When he was young he had a friend Emile; they both had been prepairing to become the priests, but one day the young lady has appeared in their life, and friend both suddenly found themselves fallen in love with her… How will the story end?
