The count Leo Nikolayevich was a Russian novelist, essayist, playwright and philosopher who primarily wrote novels and short stories. He was the master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the greatest novelists of all time - he is best known for two monumental novels, “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”. However the short-stories for children also occupy the great part of Tolstoy’s creation.

The edificatory short story “The Bird” entered in the collection for children, was written between 1869-1872. The story narrates about a boy named Serozha who receives the trap for snaring birds on the birthday. It is so fun to catch the bird, encage and care for her! But Serozha does not know that wild creatures can not live in captivity…

The most Tolstoy’s stories for children have the pedagogic subject and develops themes of moral, benignity and honor, so Tolstoy’s creation remains popular among the children’s audience for the over last hundred years. Enjoy the reading!
