James Otis Kaler, known under pen name James Otis, was an American journalist and author of children’s literature, published over the 150 books for young readers. The adventure, patriotic biographies and historical books that had great appeal for boy readers, were intended for classroom use and became the classic of children's education literature.

 “An Amateur Fireman” is a children’s novel, first published in 1898. The main protagonist is a bootblack, who spends most of his leisure time hanging around the fire station, wishing to be a fireman. His friends and neighbors discourage him, but he succeeds and eventually becomes the fireman, who not once evinced a great courage and capacity in a few dangerous fires.
