James Baldwin was an American editor and prolific writer, mostly known as the children's author in the subjects of legends, mythology, biography. He wrote over thirty books about famous people in history and retold classical stories. All of his books have the educational or literary value, so his literary activity had considerable influence on the reading of American youth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
“Picciola” is a short story, entered in the collection of Fifty Famous Stories, published in 1896. The story is about a poor gentleman, who has been wrongfully convicted and locked in one of the biggest prisons of France. He is unhappy, and he thinks that there is no one in the whole world who cares for him. The time stretches slowly by. But someday the man finds in the prison yard a tiny green plantlet, which sprouted between the stones, and at this moment the gentleman gets a new friend, who has been named Picciola.
