Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were german folklorists who lived in the 18th-19th centuries. They are mostly famous for collecting and publishing fairy-tales. Nowadays it's hard to find a person who hasn't heard about Cinderella, Rapunzel or Snow White! The beginning of 'The Golden Goose' is quite typical of many other fairy-tales: a man had three sons, the first son was smart, the second one was not so smart, and the third one was was… ergh… dumm.
