Grace James was an English writer, who is best known as the author of adventure stories for children. Grown up in Japan, Grace James was considered in her time and still remains nowadays as one of the most famous collectors and retellers of stories from the Japanese folk tradition. Her tales and short stories have been collected from many sources, among which are the Book of Record of Ancient Matters, mythology of Japan and oral folk arts. Indeed, some of the stories include the author’s personal impressions and her memoirs about upbringing in Japan.
“The Sad Story of the Yaoya's Daughter” is a tale, entered in the collection of Japanese Fairy Tales, published in 1910. A wandering ballad-singer comes to a great house in Yedo, where the people wish to be entertained, and narrates the sad story about the tragic things, which became fatal for the young beautiful girl, the daughter of a poor hard-working man named Yaoya.
