Grace James was an English writer, who is best known as the author of adventure stories for children. Grown up in Japan, Grace James was considered in her time and still remains nowadays as one of the most famous collectors and retellers of stories from the Japanese folk tradition. Her tales and short stories have been collected from many sources, among which are the Book of Record of Ancient Matters, mythology of Japan and oral folk arts.
“The Land of Yomi” is a tale, entered in the collection of Japanese Fairy Tales, published in 1910. The story is about the pair of gods – Izanagi, His Augustness, the Lord of Invitation, and with him, Izanami, Her Augustness, the Lady of Invitation. Together they stand upon the Floating Bridge of High Heaven and, lowering the heavenly jewelled spear into chaos, give birth to the islands. But the time comes to leave, and the Lady of Invitation should go to the world of the dead – the land of Yomi.
