Grace James was an English writer, who is best known as the author of adventure stories for children. Grown up in Japan, Grace James was considered in her time and still remains nowadays as one of the most famous collectors and retellers of stories from the Japanese folk tradition. Her tales and short stories have been collected from many sources, among which are the Book of Record of Ancient Matters, mythology of Japan and oral folk arts.
“The Good Thunder” is a tale, entered in the collection of Japanese Fairy Tales, published in 1910. There are many legends about Rai-den, the spirit of thunder and storm, and his son Rai-Taro. The people are mortally afraid them and hate lightning and tempest – it is considered, that Rai-den is an unloving spirit, dangerous, revengeful and cruel to man. But in very deed the people are wrong. Rai-den and his son are the great and mighty gods, who viewing the doings of men and help them. This story is about one of such occurrences.
