Emanuel Swedenborg (born Emanuel Swedberg) was a Swedish scientist, inventor and philosopher, mostly remembered for his work Heaven and Hell. At age 53, during his 'spiritual awakening', Swedenborg, having experienced various ambiguous dreams, believed to become God's messenger and wrote his first theological work The Heavenly Doctrine. Untill his death in 1722 he worked on eighteen then published and several more unpublished books on religious issues; those influenced a number of well-known writers such as Honore de Balzac, Ralph Waldo Emerson and William Butler Yeats.
Spiritual Life and the Word of God, comprising extracts from Swedenborg's larger work Apocalypse Explained, sums up the author's previous theological teachings in a simple way, clear to everyone. The author once again comes up with some controversial ideas, though still relevant and fresh.
