Elizabeth Gaskell was an English author, one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed novelists of Victorian literature, whose works offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of contemporary society. Her literary legacy includes six novels, several short stories and non-fictional pieces, as well as the first biography of Charlotte Bronte. One of the better-know novels of 19 century “Cranford” was first published as a series of episodes in the magazine “Household Words” in 1851. Narrated by the first person, the story is about life in a quiet small-town called Cranford in the north of England. “Cranford” is often considered one of, if not the best, of her works, as well as a significant piece of Victorian literature, so you have the great opportunity to enjoy it.
