Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him. Lang was also a prolific author of works both fiction and non; he wrote his own fairy tales such as Prince Prigio (1889) and Prince Ricardo of Pantouflia (1893), and wrote numerous historical texts.

Dorani is an Indian tale, included in The Olive Fairy Book. The narrative follows Dorani, a daughter of a living in Hindustan scent seller. She had a friend who was a fairy, and the two were high in favour with Indra, the king of fairyland. Dorani had the most lovely hair in the world, for it was like spun gold, and the smell fresh roses. But her locks were so long and thick that the weight of it was often unbearable, and one day she cut off a shining tress, and threw it in the river, with no knowing of the consequences…
