Anton Chekhov (1860 – 1904) is considered to be the last classic writer of the Golden Age of the Russian literature. Before Chekhov the literature had no way to analyze fleeting features of everyday and to give an overwhelming picture of life simultaneously. An Inquiry is a story about a country gentleman, who arrives in a city to obtain an inquiry on a case a party of which he is. However, he faces an almost insuperableobstacle on the way to get what he has come for in the form of an officer, whose job functions are to solve these queries actually. When the petitioner finally makes theofficer to fulfill his request by some means, the transformation of the latter is drastic and confusing for the visitor.
