Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832 – 1899) was a prolific American author of the 19-th century. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Adrift in New York - Tom and Florence Braving the World by Alger is one of the numerous stories by Alger describing desire, motivation and courage to achieve own prosperity and success. The novel is set in 19th century New York City. The storyline consists of a wealthy, older gentleman living with a nephew and niece. The nephew is a dastardly and conniving man, intent upon acquiring the wealth of his uncle. To that end, he had the uncle’s son kidnapped as a small child and seeks to estrange his cousin from the uncle’s affections with an eye toward being his uncle’s sole heir. Will he manage to accomplish his mind breaking plan and is it worth of it?
